Farhana Khera is a distinguished civil rights lawyer and leader with nearly 30 years of strategic legal, policy, and executive management experience.

Ms. Khera conducts civil rights audits, assessments and independent monitoring, with a particular focus on the discriminatory impact of products and services on vulnerable communities, pay equity, gender equity, and diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace, as well as systemic challenges in policing, housing and financial institutions.  Her focus is the culmination of a professional career immersed in identifying problems, developing effective solutions, and building the necessary partners and coalitions to achieve high impact outcomes that advance equity and end or prevent discrimination.

Ms. Khera has a combination of strategic legal advisory expertise and practical, hands-on experience with the nuts-and-bolts of managing effective teams and building successful organizations.

As the executive director of a national civil rights organization, Ms. Khera built and implemented human resources policies, procedures and systems, including conflict resolution and grievance policies, complaint procedures, nondiscriminatory hiring and promotion policies and practices, and anti-harassment training.  She also oversaw the creation and implementation of fair and equitable salary scales and job classifications and pay transparency policies.

Ms. Khera is a proven problem solver who has successfully worked with the President of the United States, Cabinet officials, members of Congress, and corporate CEOs to advise on some of the most challenging civil rights issues of our time and reach solutions. 

She has considerable experience working with corporations and building alliances across diverse stakeholders.  She has worked to support the development of anti-discrimination training for a major services company and has negotiated changes with tech companies on content moderation policies and practices.

As a civil rights lawyer, Ms. Khera has represented clients in discrimination matters.  As counsel to then-U.S. Senator Russ Feingold and the Senate Judiciary Committee, Ms. Khera provided strategic advice on legislation and policy proposals addressing civil rights matters, including hate crimes, law enforcement accountability, LGBTQ equality, gender discrimination, and immigration reform. She was the lead Senate staffer drafting legislation to end and prevent racial, ethnic and religious biased policing by federal, state and local law enforcement.

Ms. Khera received her B.A. from Wellesley College and J.D. from Cornell Law School.  Among various honors, she is the recipient of the Wellesley College Alumnae Achievement Award, National Hispanic Media Coalition Impact Award, and Auburn Theological Seminary Lives of Commitment Award and has been recognized by Emily’s List as a change maker.
